ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has rejected the proposal to increase electricity prices for consumers using up to 200 units.
The federal government has decided to provide relief to protected consumers by subsidizing up to 200 units in electricity bills, reports said.
The premier has directed not to increase tariffs for those using up to 200 units and has rejected the economic team’s proposal in this regard.
Approximately 20 million protected consumers will be given subsidy on electricity rates in the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2024-25.
Reports said the increase in electricity tariffs for major consumers will take effect from the first month of the new fiscal year.
The government is set to provide the subsidy of Rs160 billion to protected consumers until the end of the current fiscal year.
The federal government will present the budget 2024-25 on June 10 ahead of seeking a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package.
The budget was originally due to be presented on June 7 but was delayed because of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China from June 4 to June 8.
