The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Pakistan inked MoU for collaboration on food loss and waste policy work.

The purpose of this collaboration is to limit the quantity of food waste from the total waste and establish a better mechanism for disposing of waste.

The term of this MoU is for a period of one year and may be extended upon written agreement.

It will be reviewed after a year that it is fulfilling its purpose and to make any necessary revisions.

Engagement of WWF-Pakistan and LWMC will centre on collecting and sharing data related to food waste within the hospitality sector to provide evidence, as well as engage relevant stakeholders and create awareness with the goal to recommend a policy brief on food loss and waste.

Moreover, WWF-Pakistan and LWMC’s project will work around the multiple activities throughout the year which includes; surveys of restaurants in Lahore to collect information on amount of food waste generated, and its causes, handling, management and dumping, awareness raising campaigns in five different locations related to food waste, study of the composition of waste dumped in the landfills, development of Food Waste Management System and policy work which will aim at reducing the environmental impact of food waste caused by the hospitality sector.

On the occasion CEO LWMC stated that the department is taking all possible measures to establish a better and sustainable waste management system.

LWMC is also going to introduce 2 bin system in the provincial capital to segregate the organic and inorganic waste. Citizens are requested to play their civic role in maintaining cleanliness in the city.

Spokesperson LWMC briefed that citizens can always dial LWMC helpline 1139 or can use Clean Lahore mobile application.
