AS the hazardous smog levels continue to plague Lahore and other major cities, Lahore High Court (LHC) has stepped in with a series of directives to address the escalating environmental crisis. During hearing of a case on Friday, the High Court emphasized the urgency of taking immediate and effective measures to combat the hazardous air quality which has posed serious threats to public health and the environment.

The Court’s latest directive has mandated the authorities to seal factories emitting smoke throughout the province, acknowledging the detrimental impact of industrial emissions on the air quality. This move underscores the need for strict enforcement of regulations to ensure a healthier environment for all. Following the court orders, the provincial government issued a statement stating the smog emergency has been enforced across Punjab and wearing a mask is mandatory for students in all public and private schools for one month. In fact the issue of smog is not limited to Lahore alone but also extends to other major cities, including the federal capital Islamabad. The increasing levels of pollution have led to a significant deterioration in air quality, raising serious concerns about the long-term health implications for the residents of these cities. The adverse impacts of smog on human health cannot be understated. Smog, primarily composed of pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and volatile organic compounds, poses severe health risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to smog can lead to a range of health complications, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular problems etc. The microscopic particles present in smog can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, causing inflammation, irritation and aggravation of existing respiratory issues, such as asthma and bronchitis. These implications underscore the critical need for immediate efforts to reduce pollution levels. It is crucial to enforce stringent measures on industries, compelling them to adopt sustainable practices and install equipment that minimizes harmful emissions. Encouraging the use of clean energy technologies and promoting the implementation of stringent emission control standards can significantly contribute to reducing the overall environmental footprint and improving air quality. Community-driven initiatives, such as promoting cycling and establishing dedicated cycle tracks, can play a pivotal role in reducing vehicular emissions and promoting sustainable transportation alternatives.
