Islamabad, Pakistan weather update; more rains, snowfall predicted

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted widespread rain-thunderstorm with isolated hailstorms and heavy snowfall over the mountains for Islamabad, Rawalpindi and parts of Pakistan on Thursday night, Friday and Saturday.

As per the synoptic situation, a strong westerly prevails over western parts of Pakistan. It will likely grip most parts of the country tonight and persist till Sunday (March 03).

Under these conditions, rain-wind/thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, south/central Punjab, upper Sindh, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday evening/night. Widespread heavy rains and isolated hailstorms are expected in Balochistan. Heavy snowfall is likely in north Balochistan during the period.

On Friday and Saturday, widespread rain-wind/thunderstorm with heavy snowfall over the hills are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Sindh, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Widespread heavy rain and isolated hailstorm is expected in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab and Kashmir during the period.

Heavy rainfall may cause flash flooding in local nullahs of Gwadar, Ketch, Turbat, Panjgur, Awaran, Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Dalbandin, Khuzdar, Dera Ghazi Khan on Thursday and Friday (February 29-March 01). Heavy rains may cause flash flooding in hill torrents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Murree, Galyat and local nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi on Friday and Saturday (March 01-02).

Heavy rain/snowfall may cause closure of roads in Murree, Galyat, Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch and Haveli on Friday and Saturday (March 01-02).

Islamabad’s minimum temperatures will likely remain between 06-08 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday.

Rawalpindi’s minimum temperatures will likely remain between 08-10 C on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, cold and dry weather prevailed over most parts of the country during the last 24 hours. However, rain-thunderstorms with snowfall over mountains occurred in parts of the country.

Leh remained the coldest place in the country where temperature dropped 08 C below freezing.

In Islamabad, minimum temperature was recorded at 07 C. Relative humidity during the evening was recorded at 55 per cent.

In Rawalpindi, minimum temperature was recorded at 09 C. Relative humidity during the evening was recorded at 57 per cent.
