Islamabad, Pakistan weather; heavy rains, snowfall likely at start of New Year

ISLAMABAD – Heavy rains and snowfall are likely in parts of Pakistan from January 01, 2025.

As per the Pakistan Meteorological department (PMD), a frontal weather system will likely enter western parts of Pakistan on Wednesday and will persist in upper parts till January 06, 2025.

Under these conditions, heavy rains and snowfall are likely in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab and Balochistan from January 01 to January 06 with occasional gaps.

Intermittent rains and gusty winds are likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Pothohar region, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Khushab, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jahng and Toba Tek Singh from January 02 (evening/night) to January 06, 2025.

Heavy Snowfall may cause road closure/slippery conditions in Murree, Galliyat, and Pakistan’s other tourist destinations. Landslides/avalanche are likely in the hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree and Galliyat.

Tourists are advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travelling. Rains are beneficial for the standing crops in Barani areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Cold waves will likely grip most parts of the country after the rains and snowfall. Dense fog will visit plains of the country after the wet spell.

Islamabad’s minimum temperature will remain between 00-02°C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rawalpindi’s minimum temperature will remain between 01-03°C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, cold and dry prevailed in most parts and extremely cold in upper parts of Pakistan during the last 24 hours. Moderate to dense smog/fog persisted in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.

Leh remained the coldest place in Pakistan where the temperature dropped 11°C below the freezing point. Minimum temperature in Gupis and Skardu was recorded at -09°C, Gilgit -07°C, Astore and Hunza -05°C, and Chitral, Bunji and Kalam at -04°C.

In Islamabad, minimum temperature was recorded at 01°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 66 percent.

In Rawalpindi, minimum temperature was recorded at 02°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 35 percent.
