IN a shocking turn of events, the US Justice Department has revealed an SC web of conspiracy and murder-for-hire orchestrated by an Indian government employee, identified as CC-1, and his associate Nikhil Gupta. The charges against Gupta, accused of coordinating the murder plot of Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on US soil, highlights another example of abominable conduct of India in transnational terrorism.

The indictment outlines a disturbing narrative, CC-1, a senior field officer with ties to India’s Central Reserve Police Force, reportedly directed the murder plan from India. Gupta, roped in around May 2023, was instructed to contact a criminal associate to carry out the heinous act. Little did Gupta know that this so-called criminal associate was an undercover drug enforcement administration (DEA) agent, leading to his subsequent arrest and imprisonment by Czech authorities on June 30.

The gravity of these charges cannot be understated. Gupta agreed to pay $100,000 for the murder, with a $15,000 cash advance exchanged in Manhattan. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years, highlighting the severity of the accusations.

Brazenly and conversly, despite India’s role as witnessed in occupied Kashmir Pakistan and Afghanistan, its Ministry of Foreign Affairs represented by spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, swiftly responded by asserting that extraterritorial assassinations are against to government policy. While the Indian government has promised a formal investigation, the question of accountability lingers. Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, emphasizes the expectation for transparency and accountability.

The target of this foiled assassination plot, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, is an immigration lawyer and dual citizen of the US and Canada. His vocal advocacy for a separate Sikh state, Khalistan was threat for Indian government, which labeled him an “individual terrorist” in 2020. Pannun’s recent statement, accusing Modi’s government of attempting to assassinate him due to his efforts in organizing a Khalistan independence referendum, adds a layer of complexity to the situation. His determination to proceed with the referendum despite the alleged threat to his life raises serious concerns about the protection of political expression and activism.

The Khalistan movement, seeking a separate Sikh state, has historical roots that gained momentum in the 1970s. While it faced a crackdown in the 1980s and 90s, pockets of support still exist among Sikh diaspora communities, particularly in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The recent events, including the death of prominent activists associated with the movement, indicate a resurgence of tensions around Khalistan.

in addition, the connection to the murder of another Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada raises even more questions. Nijjar, declared erroneously a terrorist by India, was shot outside a Sikh temple, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of potential involvement. Gupta’s alleged mention of Nijjar as another target in the foiled plot intensifies the links between these incidents.

The potential impact on India-US relations is undeniable. US President Joe Biden has engaged with Prime Minister Modi on the matter, and diplomatic discussions between top American officials and their Indian counterparts have taken place. While the case is expected to strain bilateral ties and relations as well as the dual face of India has been unveiled once again boasting of democracy. At the same time it’s image and relation with the West and other regions would also be compromised.

There are sufficient evidence available but as a firmalty unfolding events demand a thorough and unbiased investigation into the state-sponsored transnational terrorism by the Indian government. The seriousness of the situation necessitates strict accountability, transparency, and a commitment to justice. As the world watches the developments closely, the need for taking strict action against India not only in US but also in other regions of the world as sufficient evidence is available on the record which obviates any further investigation!

The implications extend beyond the immediate incident, delving into the broader landscape of political activism, human rights, and the delicate balance between national sovereignty and international accountability. The global community must reflect on how such events could be prevented in the pursuit of justice, and the protection of individuals exercising their right to advocate for political causes, whatever contentious they may be.l

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun’s ordeal and the larger context of the Khalistan movement highlight the challenges faced by opperessed communities seeking self-determination. While the idea of Khalistan has historical roots, its resonance in the contemporary diaspora underscores the enduring quest for identity and autonomy. The alleged attempt to silence Pannun through violence raises fundamental questions about the protection of dissenting voices and the lengths some governments may go to suppress movements perceived as threats to their authority.

The connection to the earlier murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar adds another layer of complexity, sparking diplomatic tensions between Canada and India. The international community must pay heed to the interconnectedness of these events, recognizing the potential ripple effects on global relations. The involvement of state in extraterritorial assassinations demand collective scrutiny and condemnation to safeguard the principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of law.

In conclusion, the unfolding events surrounding the foiled assassination plot raise critical questions about the conduct of nations in the international arena. The gravity of scenario involving an Indian government employee and the potential connections to broader geopolitical tensions is regrettable.

The international community must uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and accountability, regardless of political considerations. As the world watches, the actions taken in response to these henious events will shape not only the trajectory of India-US relations but also set a precedent for how the global community addresses state-sponsored terrorism and threats to political activism on the international stage.
