Has Pakistan set limit on Haq Meher amid economic crisis?

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is facing turbulent times as distressed masses toiling to put food on the table amid a deepening cost of living crisis that has hit the South Asian country.

Amid the economic meltdown, the government has rolled out an austerity drive to cut the cost, and several stern measures were taken. Under the austerity plan, only single dish rule has been applied for weddings and other social gatherings.

Lately, news surfaced on social media, claiming that the government sets limit for Haq Meher  -– a mandatory gift given by the husband to the wife after the wedding, and the facts alarmed many; especially those who are planning to tie the knot soon.

In reality, the federal or any provincial government has not imposed any such restriction and the decision is of the local Jirga of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Tribal elders of Lower Dir directed area residents to limit Haq Mehr to a maximum of one tola of gold for Nikkah.

It warned of social boycotts and penalty for any violation of the agreement.

People in South Asian nation mostly gifts gold and other valuables to bride in Haq Meher, and amid the deteriorating economic situation, the yellow metal has shattered all previous record and hit an all-time high of Rs215,000 per tola.
