The Punjab government has abolished the service rule (A.17) which guaranteed government jobs for children of deceased government employees. Instead, the Finance Department has introduced a revised financial assistance package offering substantial increases in monetary compensation.
Under the new scheme, the families of deceased employees will receive significantly increased financial assistance based on the employee’s grade level.
Employees of Grade 1 to 4 will now receive Rs. 50 lakhs (increased from Rs. 16 lakhs), those in Grade 5 to 10 will receive Rs. 75 lakhs (increased from Rs. 19 lakhs), and Grade 11 to 15 employees will be entitled to Rs. 1 crore (increased from Rs. 22 lakhs). The financial assistance increases progressively for higher grades, with Grade 20 to 22 employees receiving the highest amount at Rs. 2 crore (increased from Rs. 40 lakhs).
This revised package aims to provide greater financial security and support to families who have lost their loved ones serving the government. It represents a significant shift from the previous system of offering government jobs, providing greater flexibility and immediate financial relief to the families.
While the details of implementation and eligibility are still being finalized, this announcement marks a positive step towards ensuring the well-being of families affected by the tragic loss of a government employee. It is expected to benefit countless families across Punjab and alleviate some of the financial burden associated with such a loss.
