LAHORE – Banaspati ghee and cooking oil are basic food commodities, which are used in every house to prepare food in Pakistan. The latest rise in their rates will affect the monthly budgets of every household.

Reports said up to 20 percent increase was recorded in prices of ghee and cooking oil in two months despite the government’s claims that inflation is decreasing in the country.

The prices of ghee moved up by Rs30 to Rs120 per kilogramme in different cities of Pakistan while Rs50-Rs150 hike was observed in cooking oil rates.

The retail price of ‘A’ quality ghee ranges between Rs505 to Rs559 per kilogram. Shopkeepers said the price of per kg Sufi ghee has surged to Rs350 in Lahore and other cities.

However, the price of ‘B’ quality ghee hovers between Rs440 to Rs500 per kilogramme.

Wholesale dealers have linked the latest hike in prices to increase in prices of raw material in international market.

CPI Inflation Decelerates

Meanwhile, the core inflation measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI) decelerated further to 4.9 percent during November 2024 as compared to 7.2 percent recorded during October 2024, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Monday.

According to PBS data, the CPI based inflation during the same month of last year (November 2023) was recorded at 29.2%.

On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.5% in November 2024 as compared to an increase of 1.2% in the previous month and an increase of 2.7% in November 2023.
