ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) alert for glaciated areas of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan.
As per the Met Office, ambient atmospheric conditions facilitated a rapid increase in air temperature which enhanced the risk of GLOF in glaciated regions of the country.
Temperatures in the region remained 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal values, causing accelerated glacial melt. Additionally, rain, wind, and thunderstorms are forecasted for the 11th and 12th of May, increasing the likelihood of triggering a GLOF events or flash floods in the vulnerable snow-covered and glaciated areas of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Chitral.
