ISLAMABAD – The inflation-bitten masses in Pakistan are expected to suffer another jolt as sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has sought a massive increase in price of natural gas.
SNGPL is the largest integrated gas company serving more than 7.22 million consumers in North Central Pakistan through an extensive network in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
The company has submitted an application to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) seeking an increase of 147 percent in gas prices.
It has asked for jacking up the gas prices to cover the revenue shortfall of Rs189.18. If the petition is approved by Ogra, it would put the additional burden on public facing uncontrolled inflation.
Expected Gas Prices in Pakistan from July 1
Reports said the SNGPL has sought whooping increase of Rs2,646.18 per metric million British thermal unit (mmbtu) in gas prices. It has also asked the regulatory authority of fix the average gas price at Rs4,446.89.
The expected gas prices would include the additional amount, sought by the SNGPL, if Ogra accepts its application.
Ogra will conduct hearing of the SNGPL plea on March 25 in Lahore and on March 27 in Peshawar.
