ISLAMABAD – The European Union (EU) has maintained ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights over ongoing safety concerns.

Despite the efforts, EU remains restrictions on Pakistan’s national flag carrier from flying to European countries for four years due to its failure to comply with EU safety standards.

European Commission spokesperson said PIA has not effectively adhered to essential safety protocols, including operational safety, maintenance, and regulatory oversight.

He further said all Pakistani airlines, including PIA, must implement corrective actions to address limitations in their safety management systems. EU spokesperson also pointed out that Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) needs to enhance its monitoring capabilities.

As of mid-2024, no Pakistani airline, including PIA, is listed on the EU’s air safety list due to regulatory compliance concerns. Ban on PIA occurred after suspension of its Third Country Operator (TCO) license by the International Air Safety Assessment (IASA). Thus, the airline cannot operate flights between Pakistan and European countries until it resolves these issues and meets EU aviation safety standards.

Currently, Pakistan’s aviation officials are working to address flaws pointed out by international regulators. The ban on PIA’s European flights will remain until the airline meets the EU’s stringent safety requirements, impacting its operations and Pakistan’s reputation in global aviation safety.
