ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is expected to increase the electricity prices in Pakistan on the account of fuel cost adjustment.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed an application with NEPRA seeking an increase in the electricity prices for a month.

Expected Increase in Power Tariff in Pakistan

CPPA has demanded Rs7.31 per unit increase in the power tariff on the account of fuel cost adjustment. If the demand is approved by NEPRA, it would put an additional burden of Rs66.77 billion on inflation-bitten consumers.

CPPA in its petition said 7.93 billion units were distributed to power distribution companies in January 2024.

Nepra will take up the petition on Feb 23. The revised prices will not be applicable to KE consumers.

Increase in Gas Price

Earlier this month, the federal cabinet on Thursday increased gas prices for residential users up to 67% and for fertiliser plants by 700% to recover additional Rs242 billion from all the consumers.

Immediately after the cabinet meeting, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority issued the notification of the new gas prices aimed at meeting the International Monetary Fund’s condition to raise prices by February 15th –Thursday. The decision would take effect from the first of February and the new bills would be issued with revised rates, showed the notification.
