ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan has rejected Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s request to postpone the presidential elections and issued a written decision.
According to details, the Election Commission in its written decision held that the national and provincial assembly elections have already taken place on February 8, and under the constitution, presidential elections must be held within 30 days.
It said that the nomination papers of candidates including Mahmood Khan Achakzai have been submitted, and the scrutiny of nomination papers has also been completed.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the ECP said, did not raise any objection at the time of scrutiny before the returning officer regarding the incompleteness of the Electoral College.
The Election Commission decided that the Electoral College is complete at the moment, with the selection of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers already done.
The presidential election cannot be postponed by calling the Electoral College incomplete.
The presidential election cannot be postponed for more than 30 days. Recently, 22 MNAs and MPAs have vacated their seats.
The Electoral College consists of the presence of parliament and provincial assemblies.
Due to the vacant seats, if the Electoral College was considered incomplete, it would have been clearly stated in the constitution. Currently, the Electoral College is present in parliament and provincial assemblies.
Member Election Commission Nisar Durrani while speaking to the media said that the arrangements for the presidential elections are fully complete.
The electoral material and staff have reached the assemblies.
“Be assured that the presidential elections will be fair, transparent, and peaceful. The voter list cannot be challenged today,” he said.
According to some reports , a day before the presidential election, Presidential candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai of Sunni Ittehad Council wrote a letter to the Election Commission about postponing the presidential election, stating that many specific seats in the national and provincial assemblies are still vacant, so the election should be postponed until the Electoral College is complete.
