ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan has refused to delay general elections due on February 8 on the basis of a resolution passed by the upper house, the sources privy to the development said on Monday.

The sources said that a formal letter was dispatched to the Senate Secretariat outlining the Commission’s stance on the scheduled elections set for February 8th.

The letter from the Commission underscored the importance of security, with instructions issued to caretaker governments for ensuring a safe electoral process.

However, the Supreme Court has voiced its determination to hold elections on February 8th.

The Commission highlighted that, given the historical context of past general and local government elections occurring during winters, postponing the scheduled elections to 2024 is not feasible at this time.

In a related context, it’s noteworthy that Senator Dilawar Khan initiated the resolution for delay in the general elections on January 5th, which received unanimous approval when 14 senators were present.

Later, two more resolutions were moved to the Senate for delay in elections.
