The situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district is dire and demands immediate action. The loss of 75 lives in just three days is a tragedy and displacement of hundreds of families is a humanitarian crisis in the making. The attack on convoys, which were travelling under police escort, is particularly alarming. The fact that armed gunmen were able to target and kill so many people in broad daylight is failure of provincial government to maintain law & order.
KPK government must step up and fulfil its primary responsibility to ensure to protect lives and properties of the people. The rule of law must be enforced, and those responsible for the killings must be brought to justice. The current state of lawlessness is not only a threat to the people of Kurram but to the entire country. It is imperative that rival tribes be brought to negotiating table. The long-standing tribal feuds in Kurram are not new yet scale and intensity of the recent violence demand urgent intervention.
A ceasefire must be brokered, and a peace agreement reached, to ensure that such horrific incidents do not continue to occur. This is not just a matter of restoring order but also of preventing further suffering for the people who have already borne brunt of the clashes. In fact, a comprehensive plan must be put in place to address underlying causes of the violence. Tribal and family feuds cannot be allowed to escalate into full-scale conflict with deadly consequences. The state must work to mediate these disputes, providing alternative mechanisms for conflict resolution and ensuring that no group or individual feels compelled to take up arms to settle personal grievances.
