ISLAMABAD – Chief Minister of New Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested by Indian authorities in an excise liquor policy-linked money laundering case.
Kejriwal, 55, was apprehended hours after the Indian Court denied interim relief to him in the liquor policy case. Enforcement Directorate officials visited his residence to serve him summons. Officials conducted search of his premises and recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Kejriwal will undergo medical examination and be presented in court tomorrow. His arrest marks the fourth high-profile arrest in Indi after Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and K Kavitha.
With the high-profile arrest, Kejriwal becomes India’s first sitting chief minister to be arrested in a scandal. The politician is expected to be transferred to ED headquarters in Indian capital.
In the meanwhile, Kejriwal’s legal team moved Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s earlier denial of interim relief in the excise policy case. The Supreme Court is expected to hear AAP’s plea on Friday.
Kejriwal’s party members stated that he will not resign as chief minister but will continue to govern from jail.
