Punjab government has extended its decision to restrict attendance to 50 percent in public and private schools in provincial capital and Rawalpindi.

According to the notification issued by the provincial education department, classes up to Grade 6 will be staggered in all public and private schools till February 15, 2022.

Earlier, government restricted attendance in schools from January 20 due to rising cases of the coronavirus as country battled fifth wave of the pandemic fueled by omicron variant.

Meanwhile, Pakistan reported as many as 7,963 cases of coronavirus in a single day on Saturday, the second-highest daily caseload since the outbreak of the pandemic in Feb 2020, according to the National Command and Operation Centre’s latest stats on the Omicron-driven fifth wave in the country.

A total of 70,389 samples were tested, out of which 7,963 turned out to be positive, showing the infection rate of 11.31 per cent. The nationwide tally of confirmed infections rose to 1,410,033 with addition of 7,963 new cases and 27 more patients succumbed to the viral disease in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 29,219. The NCOC said the number of patients in critical care in various hospitals across the country has risen to 1375.

With the detection of new cases, the total number of positive cases has jumped to 1.41 million, while 27 more patients have succumbed to the virus, taking the death toll to 29,219, the official stats showed.
