Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa is not interested in extension of his tenure.
Speaking to media in Islamabad, Tarar clarified that during a recent meeting with Chief Justice Isa and the Attorney General, the chief justice made it clear that he had no interest in having an extension.
Tarar emphasised that such discussions should not be entertained further.
He asserted that Chief Justice Isa was a distinguished figure and reiterated that continuous speculation about the extension was unfounded.
Tarar urged the media to shift focus to other topics.
Tarar argued that the debate over a two-thirds majority was relevant only if an extension was being considered.
Meanwhile, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination, Rana Sanaullah, in a ststement, said that CJP Qazi Faez Isa will not accept a personal extension but supports a general age limit extension.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa has refused an extension in his service tenure, the statement said.
While speaking on a private media channel on Monday, Rana said that Justice Isa discussed the matter with the Law Minister and Attorney General, indicating that while he would accept a general age limit extension for all, he would not accept an extension in his individual case.
Rana noted that the government lacks the parliamentary majority required for either granting the extension or passing a constitutional amendment to facilitate it.
