Pedri scored the only goal of the game as La Liga leaders Barcelona defeated Girona away from home to cushion their lead at the top of the table over Real Madrid.
After a tough 61 minutes, the 20-year-old managed to get on the end of a Jordi Alba cross for the game’s only goal with takes them to 47 points from 18 matches, six more than Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid who has a game in hand.
Despite dominating the possession in the first half against Girona, Barcelona failed to create any clear chances while preventing the hosts from doing so themselves which made for a tough watch.
Ousmane Dembele had the clearest of chances of the first half, drawing a save from Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga in the 14th minute after Ansu Fati had caught the keeper on the ball.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first until the goal arrived.
Another slick passing move allowed Jordi Alba to cross from inside the box which fell to Pedri who easily tapped the ball home.
The game sprung into life after the goal with Girona seemingly equalising just three minutes later before VAR ruled out Arnau Martinez’s strike for offside.
Barcelona then decided to see off the game, maintaining the possession to keep Girona at bay to secure three points.
Narrow wins have been a theme for Xavi’s men this season but it seems to be paying off as they have conceded the least goals at this stage of the season.
In other results, Cadiz, Sevilla and Real Betis also earned wins in their respective contests.
