LAHORE – Pakistan cricket sensation Babar Azam is reportedly poised to reclaim the captaincy of the national team.
The sources said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to reinstate Babar Azam as the skipper after appointment of Mohsin Naqvi as the new chairman of the PCB.
They said that Mohsin Naqvi, previously serving as the interim Chief Minister of Punjab, assumed the chairmanship of the PCB uncontested in the recent elections.
Under Naqvi’s leadership, significant changes are anticipated within Pakistan cricket.
The decision comes after deliberations at the National Cricket Academy, with Mohsin Naqvi now assuming the esteemed position as the 37th chairman of the PCB.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam’s potential return to captaincy follows his resignation last year across all formats, following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup 2023. The team’s fifth-place finish and failure to advance to the semi-finals prompted Azam’s resignation from the leadership role.
In the wake of Azam’s departure, the PCB appointed Shahid Afridi as the T20 captain and Shan Masood as the Test captain. However, both captains faced formidable challenges during their debut series.
The recent outcomes under their leadership include a 4-1 defeat in a T20I series against New Zealand and a 3-0 loss in a Test series against Australia, signaling a tumultuous period for Pakistan cricket.
