Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower, currently the head coach of Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), shared his views on the Pakistani national team’s captaincy in an interview.

Andy suggested that leg-spinner Shadab Khan is no longer in contention for the captaincy, proposing that wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan might be the best choice.

He mentioned the recent turmoil in captaincy and coaching changes impacting the team’s performance adversely.

Andy noted that despite bringing back players like Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, the changes did not yield positive results.

He also highlighted Gary Kirsten’s brief tenure as head coach coinciding with the team’s early exit in a major tournament, emphasising the team’s nervous body language during matches. “Kirsten didn’t have time to mould the side into a unit,” said Andy Flower.

The captaincy saga saw Babar Azam resign after the ICC World Cup, followed by Shaheen Shah Afridi’s brief stint and subsequent return of captaincy to Babar amid reported team discord.

The team’s recent results, including a series tie against a weakened New Zealand side, narrow wins over Ireland, and a shocking defeat to the USA, underscored the team’s challenges under evolving leadership.
