Algeria’s current President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has secured a second five-year term following early presidential elections held on Saturday, the country’s electoral authority announced on Sunday.

Mohamed Charfi, the head of the Independent National Authority of Elections (ANIE), revealed during a press briefing that Tebboune received 94.65% of the votes.

Charfi further noted that Abdelali Hassani Cherif, leader of the Movement for Society and Peace, the largest Islamic party, finished second with 3.17% of the vote.

Youcef Aouchiche, the first national secretary of the Socialist Forces Front, Algeria’s oldest opposition party, ranked third with 2.16%.

In total, 5.7 million votes were cast out of more than 24 million registered voters.

The electoral authority will now send the results to the Constitutional Court, which will review any appeals and announce the final results within 10 days.

Charfi also reported that the voter turnout within Algeria reached 48.03%, surpassing the 39.88% recorded in the 2019 presidential election.

This is the second presidential election supervised entirely by an independent electoral authority, a process introduced after the 2019 election, which was previously overseen by the Ministry of Interior.
