ISLAMABAD – Pakistani users are expected to enjoy a high-speed internet started from 2025 as the South Asian country’s landline system is set to connect with modern cables, it emerged on Tuesday.

Reports said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had confirmed the development amid ongoing concerns being raised by freelancers and others, who are linked to online businesses, over slow speed of internet in the country.

The Pakistani landline system will be integrated to a 45,000-kilometer-long global internet network. It will connect with 46 cable landing stations across Europe, Africa, and Asia, significantly boosting the internet speed.

The “Africa-2” cable project is being spearheaded by Facebook’s Meta and Pakistan is also a part of it. Reports said the cable will be operation by 2025, ensuring faster internet speed.

The development will help Pakistan to pace up its efforts for digital transformation and enhance connectivity.

Pakistan Internet Speed

Internet in Pakistan remains a hot topic as the country of over 242 million is struggling to connect online, as the nation ranked around 141 globally for average download speeds.

Mobile Internet speed is at 20.61 Mbps, as internet speeds remain far behind leaders like developed nations like UAE, which boasts a staggering over 400Mbps. The country currently holds the 141st position with just 15.6 Mbps in Broadband internet.

The slow internet speeds present a significant barrier to the country’s economic growth, educational advancements, and digital business development. Despite a surge in internet usage, in this age, digital infrastructure is not keeping pace with other countries.

The disparity in internet access between high- and low-income nations highlights the need for urgent investments in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure to unlock opportunities for growth, innovation, and global integration.
