MULTAN – Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has said there was a need to provide prepaid meters to electricity consumers.

Speaking to the media at the MEPCO headquarters, Leghari said that through new boards, the company will offer better facilities to consumers. A prompt response will be give if even ordinary people call the company.

He said that DISCOs will have the authority to retain or dismiss employees as needed, and emphasized that results are required. He also stressed that electricity companies have been instructed to strictly adhere to the relief measures provided by the Punjab government, and that even a single unit of error will not be tolerated.

He noted that electricity theft is intolerable for both the state and the public. Efforts are being made to reduce theft-related losses this year, with a target to eliminate the 15.6% electricity theft in the MEPCO region.

Companies will be given a free hand in dealing with electricity theft, he said.

Leghari said the Punjab government has provided relief to consumers using 200 to 500 units with Rs45 billion.
