Punjab Senior and Food Minister Abdul Aleem Khan on Wednesday informed that consultation in the high-level committee set up to consider the new local government system of Punjab has been completed and three different models have been envisaged to be given final approval by Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Senior Minister Abdul Aleem Khan was chairing a meeting at CM Office, which deliberated on different aspects of the Punjab Local Government Act 2019 and recommended appropriate changes in the existing Local Bodies System.
Various recommendations were approved to ensure devolution of powers and resolution of problems at grassroots level, which could ensure rapid development as well.
The senior minister said the purpose of this follow-up meeting was to remove ambiguities in Punjab Local Government Act 2019 for which detailed deliberations have been undertaken.
Prime Minister Imran Khan wanted to introduce a dynamic local bodies system in Punjab so that the people may not face any difficulty in solving their problems. For this, the local government system is of utmost importance, he added.
Abdul Aleem Khan said the municipal corporations, town committees and metropolitan institutions will be redefined in terms of population in different cities and the powers of elected representatives, as well as administration, will also be defined in the new system.
The meeting was also attended by Law Minister Raja Basharat and Provincial Ministers – Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Chaudhry Zaheeruddin, Sibtain Khan, Mian Khalid Mahmood and Chaudhry Akhlaq Hussain who expressed their views on the Punjab Local Government Act 2019.
The Local Government Secretary and senior officers presented recommendations and highlighted the proposed LG plan for various cities in the province.
