DIAMER – At least 20 people were killed and nearly two dozen suffered injured after a passenger bus fell into a ravine in an area of Diamer district of Gilgit Baltistan on Friday.
The according occurred at the Yashokhal area on the Karakoram Highway in early hours of Friday, police said, adding that the vehicle with 38 people on board was going to Gilgit from Rawalpindi.
Rescue officials have shifted the injured people and bodies to a hospital in Chilas as the rescue operation has been completed.
An official from the district’s administration said that 21 people were injured in the incident, adding that five of them are in critical condition.
He said that army helicopters also took part in the rescue operation, adding that families of the victims are being contacted.
He said that the accident took place due to overspeeding or taking a sharp turn on the narrow road.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed condolences and grief over the loss of loss in the bus accident, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
He also directed the authorities concerned to provide all possible medical aid to the injured.
