LAHORE – The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) unveiled its Annual Performance Report for 2024 on Tuesday.
During the outgoing year, LWMC established sanitation system in 103 tehsils under the Suthra Punjab program.
Quick response to major cleanliness challenges and individual services further solidified the company’s role. The sanitation system in Lahore was expanded to include door-to-door services in 100 union councils, cleaning of 500 markets, and 400 villages.
On Eid-ul-Adha 2024, LWMC successfully managed the disposal of 1,581,375 tons of waste in Lahore, including 54,000 tons of animal remains.
Additionally, 1.4 million eco-friendly waste bags were distributed across the city. The 1139 helpline, along with webmail and social media platforms, resolved 75,234 complaints promptly, while 5 complaints from the Clean Lahore app were also addressed.
LWMC’s Enforcement Wing conducted 486,682 inspections during the year. Actions against illegal dumping included issuing 10,358 challans, imposing fines totaling PKR 231.85 million, and serving 47,741 notices.
The Enforcement wing also registered 313 FIRs, prosecuted 1,159 violators, and seized 383 vehicles involved in illegal dumping activities.
LWMC implemented a range of measures to combat the harmful effects of smog, ensuring that major roads in the city underwent scraping, washing, sprinkling, and anti-smog activities across 45 main roads. These steps aimed at reducing the impact of smog on public health and the environment.
Under the supervision of the Community Mobilization Department, LWMC organized over 97,660 special awareness campaigns throughout the year. These initiatives were held at various locations, including markets, parks, residential areas, and UC camps, in line with the Suthra Punjab vision, with a special focus during Eid-ul-Adha.
One of the landmark events in 2024 was LWMC Road Show, which drew a significant turnout from waste management companies, solid waste segregation firms, manufacturing companies, and various stakeholders. This event became a platform for the promotion of solid waste management as an emerging industry.
Manufacturers, contractors, NGOs, international benefactors, waste management experts, educational institutions, and human resource firms came together, discussing modern waste management technologies, machinery, and the importance of public awareness.
LWMC has embarked on a transformative journey to enhance the city’s cleanliness by expanding its door-to-door waste collection services to 1.5 million households. Each worker has been assigned the responsibility of cleaning 240 homes and 800 meters of streets to ensure effective waste management.
To further improve the quality of services, 10 loader rickshaws have been deployed in each union council, accompanied by the inclusion of new machinery and a well-trained workforce. Modern sweeping machines, dump trucks, and other advanced equipment have been procured to streamline the cleaning process.
Additionally, the company has introduced a sanitation tax to secure sustainable financial resources for ongoing and future waste management projects. Addressing workforce shortages, LWMC has initiated fresh recruitments to bolster its cleaning operations.
Chief Minister Punjab has set an ambitious target of achieving a zero-waste Punjab within three months, emphasizing that the benefits of these efforts should reach every citizen.
