Expressing surprise as to why children ofgovernment servants were given jobs on a priority basis, Chief Justiceof Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa said on Thursday that such policies were a blatant violation of the constitution.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, headed by the CJP, heard the case of a recruitment made in the General Post Office, Islamabad. “Are children of the people belonging to other professions not Pakistanis?” the chief justice questioned. The additional attorney general replied that the policy had been formulated during the last government. “Was the last government above the law?” Justice Isa questioned, and remarked that such a policy should be discarded. “Let me make it clear that the constitution is supreme,”he asserted.

The AAG prayed to the court to give him time to seek instructions from the government. Justice Isa said why not summon the attorney general of Pakistan, and then issued a notice to him.

The chief justice asked whether the prime minister had the authority to alter the policy on his own.
