ISLAMABAD  – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday approved the first vaccine for monkeypox.

According to the news agency, the WHO has approved the first monkeypox vaccine, MVA-BN, which can be administered in two doses, four weeks apart, to individuals aged 18 years or older.

The news agency further stated that the approved vaccine is 76% effective after the first dose and 82% effective after the second dose against the virus.

The WHO has already declared monkeypox a public health emergency.

According to the WHO, monkeypox has spread to 121 countries, with 500 fatalities reported this year.

 In high-risk groups and individuals with weakened immune systems, the mortality rate of monkeypox can reach up to 10%.

In Pakistan, five cases of monkeypox have been reported, found among individuals who had traveled from various countries.
