The next step in what the U.S. men’s national soccer team hopes is a successful 2022 World Cup qualifi-cation campaign will be a road game against Can-ada.
This is also a showdown of the top two teams in the Concacaf World Cup qualifying standings. The Canadians are a surprise leader with 19 points through nine games; the USMNT is one point be-hind in second place and one point ahead of third-place Mexico.
Sunday’s game in Canada is the second of three matches in the next-to-last round of Concacaf quali-fiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which will be held from Nov. 21-Dec. 18. On Thursday, the USMNT earned a 1-0 victory against El Salvador in Columbus, Ohio.
Antonee Robinson scored the winning goal in the 52nd minute as the USMNT remains on course for World Cup qualification. On Wednesday, the U.S. will host Honduras in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The final round of World Cup qualifiers starts on March 24, when Mexico will host the USMNT. The U.S. will host Panama in Orlando, Florida, on March 27, and then finish qualifying at Costa Rica on March 30.
The top three teams automatically qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the fourth-place team must compete in an inter-continental playoff.
