The ban was imposed without any explanation regarding its reason or expected duration.
The users experienced difficulties accessing the platform on their mobile devices.
This move followed a criticism by Fahrettin Altun, a Turkish communications official, who on Wednesday accused Instagram of censoring condolence messages about the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent Hamas official.
Altun, who serves as the communications director for the Turkish presidency, expressed his displeasure on X, stating that Instagram had not indicated any policy breaches to justify its actions.
The Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) of Turkey announced its decision on August 2 through its website.
Meta Platforms Inc., Instagram’s parent company, has yet to respond to the ban or Altun’s allegations.
