LAHORE – In the T20 World Cup 2022 match against India, South African umpire Marais Erasmus announced his retirement due to criticism arising from decisions against Pakistan.

The foreign media reported that 60-year-old Marais Erasmus’s last assignment will be the Test series between New Zealand and Australia.

He concluded his umpiring duties in 80 Tests, 124 One Day Internationals, and 43 T20 matches. Erasmus also officiated in 18 Women’s T20 matches and was appointed ICC Umpire of the Year thrice.

Erasmus stated that he informed the ICC about his retirement in October last year, citing advancing age as the reason for retiring. He clarified that he was not asked to retire due to increasing age.

Erasmus has also played first-class cricket for South Africa. It should be noted that during the 2022 matches between India and Bangladesh, elite ICC umpires came under criticism for controversial decisions against the Bangladesh Tigers, while during the T20 World Cup 2022 match between Pakistan and India in Melbourne, many former cricketers criticized them for signaling a no-ball at the gesture of Virat Kohli.
