ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s seasoned politician Siraj ul Haq confirmed on Monday that he was stepping aside as leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, handing the baton to senior leaders of the right wing party.

Haq, 61, decided to step down from the coveted position after losing elections to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed independent candidate Muhammad Bashir Khan with margin of over 20,000 votes in NA-6 (Lower Dir-I) constituency.

The decision comes as JI failed to grab single seat in National Assembly and in Punjab. The party only managed to get 2 seats each in Sindh and KP provincial legislatures.

Earlier in the day, party senior leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman vacated his seat in the provincial assembly, over alleged electoral malpractice.
