In its largest operation of the year, the Sindh Excise Department has seized smuggled counterfeit medicines worth over Rs1 billion. Sindh Narcotics Control Department Seizes 36 Million Illicit Tablets. Two suspects were arrested during the operation, according to Sindh Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla.
Addressing a press conference at the office of the Director General of Narcotics Control on Tuesday, Chawla revealed that the drugs were discovered during a snap check at the Sassi Toll Plaza, two days ago. He added that the operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Sindh Narcotics Control Department to crack down on drug trafficking across the province. Initial investigations showed that the seized tablets, upon laboratory testing, had the potential to be processed into dangerous substances like ice crystals and cocaine.
The illegal drugs were en route to a warehouse in Korangi, where a raid was conducted. However, the drugs were removed from the warehouse before the operation was carried out. Chawla suggested that the drugs were likely smuggled via port and intended for international distribution. Ongoing investigations with the help of intelligence agencies are expected to uncover more details about the network behind the trafficking.
The Minister commended the cooperation of various intelligence agencies in this operation. After following the necessary legal procedures, the seized drugs, vehicle, and arrested individuals were handed over to the Sindh Drugs Control Authority for further action. Chawla also praised the team involved in the operation and said he would request the Sindh Chief Minister to reward them for their efforts.
In response to the growing issue, Chawla emphasized that strict surveillance on all entry and exit points in the province has been enhanced, and intelligence networks for snap checks within cities have been expanded.
