Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will participate in the fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries which is being held in Doha, Qatar this year, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Upon the invitation of the emir of Qatar, PM Shehbaz will travel to Doha on March 5-6 to participate in the UN conference being held from March 5-9.

The conference will consider steps to accelerate sustainable development in the world’s least developed countries, helping them make progress on the road to prosperity.

At the meeting, leaders will mobilise additional international support measures, acting in favour of LDCs. They will agree on a renewed partnership between LDCs and their development partners.

In Doha, the prime minister will hold bilateral meetings and interactions with participating leaders and heads of delegations on the sidelines of the UN conference, added the PMO statement.

Pakistan has been playing a leading role in UN platforms to amplify the collective voice of the global south and promote sustainable development worldwide.

In its capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China in 2022, Pakistan actively supported the efforts of the LDCs chair and Qatar in securing the adoption of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries by consensus, and its endorsement by the UN General Assembly.
