KARACHI – Former cricketing icon Shahid Afridi on Wednesday urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to streamline leadership by appointing a single captain across all three formats of the game.
Afridi emphasized the need for stability and continuity in leadership roles to foster team cohesion and performance enhancement.
Addressing the media, Afridi said that the PCB should designate a single individual to lead the national squad across Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He advocated for providing the appointed captain a tenure spanning two to three years, allowing ample time for the incumbent to implement strategic plans and overcome challenges.
The cricketer-turned-commentator highlighted the redundancy of appointing vice-captains, stressing that in the absence of the captain during matches, a designated player should seamlessly assume the mantle of leadership.
Following Babar Azam’s relinquishment of captaincy across all formats, PCB swiftly reshuffled leadership roles within the national team.
Shahid Afridi’s son-in-law Shaheen Shah Afridi has been entrusted with the captaincy of the T20I team, supported by Mohammad Rizwan as the vice-captain.
In the Test arena, Shan Masood has been appointed as the team captain, while during the recent Australia tour, Shaheen Afridi also served as a captain of T20I.
