Public sector overhaul

A high-level committee constituted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reportedly recommended to abolish nearly 70,000 vacant posts in BS 1-16 and restructure or shut down around 80 federal government entities. This measure reflects a much-needed commitment to austerity in the face of pressing financial challenges.

For too long, our public sector has been operating under an outdated paradigm. The inefficiencies inherent in such a system have led to bloated staffing levels and excessive expenditures that are no longer tenable. By abolishing these long-vacant posts, the government will not only be reducing unnecessary fiscal burdens but is also signalling a shift towards a more streamlined and efficient administrative framework. We see it is a strategic overhaul aimed at aligning our public sector with best practices observed in the private sector and globally. The ultimate goal should be to transform public sector departments into smart, efficiently staffed entities that can operate within reasonable budgetary constraints. There will undoubtedly be concerns about the impact on youth employment, particularly for those who may not possess the educational qualifications for higher-level positions. However, instead of perpetuating a cycle of low-cadre, low-skill employment, it is important that we focus on equipping our youth with the skills needed for better opportunities. Comprehensive training programmes in various trades and technologies can empower them to earn a dignified living, contributing more meaningfully to the economy. Moreover, rationalising staff in public sector departments should be mirrored by efforts within the government itself. Cabinet members and high-ranking officials must lead by example, demonstrating a will to reducing their own expenses. Every penny of public money should be spent with utmost care, reinforcing public confidence that their tax contributions are being managed responsibly.
