In a first for Spain as Europe’s space competition heats up, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Saturday that a mini rocket developed by a Spanish business will launch within a few weeks.
The dedication and labour of many people will have been worthwhile, Sanchez said at the El Arenosillo launch site in Huelva, Andalusia. “This rocket, when it is launched, we Spaniards will all watch it on television, and I know that when, within a few weeks MIURA1 will begin its journey, the devotion and hard work of many people… will have been worthwhile,” Sanchez said.
The MIURA1 sub-orbital rocket from PLD Space is designed to conduct up to four missions annually and potentially transport goods “into space and bring it back safely,” according to the startup.
The PM said, “Your aspiration is shared by the entire Spanish society because we are driven by a same goal: to position Spain at the forefront of this space transport business, which is not only developing but also potent.
The launch, according to PLD Space CEO Ezequiel Sanchez, demonstrates Spain’s competence in the field.
