As the country gears up for general elections later in the year, the Pakistan Muslim League-N on Saturday nominated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as its candidate for the position of prime minister.

During a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s House, Shehbaz Sharif, the party’s president, stated that the amendments to the Election Act have cleared Nawaz Sharif’s of any disqualification, removing any obstacles to his return.

“In my capacity as the party president, I have nominated Nawaz Sharif as the candidate for prime minister from the PML-N,” Shehbaz said.

He emphasised that the final decision on the date of general elections rests with the Election Commission of Pakistan, adding that his party wanted to conduct the polls as soon as possible.

“Supreme Court’s verdict will not create any obstacle for him,” Shehbaz Sharif said.

“We have saved the state while keeping our politics at stake,” Shehbaz Sharif said. On the occasion, PML-N leader Ishaq Dar stated that Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification period ended on July 26.

Meanwhile, talking to anchors and bureau chiefs in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif said that he had been the blue-eyed of establishment for 30 years. He said he was proud of always having good relations with the establishment.

Premier Sharif said the allies had given him authority to appoint a caretaker prime minister.

Constitutionally, there are still a few days left for appointment of caretaker prime minister.

“I believe that due to the poor economic condition our vote bank decreased but we saved the state. “We had to deal with the challenges. IMF is the sole reason behind inflation. We have made efforts to reduce inflation and there has been some reduction as well,” he said. The prime minister said that he had never made complaint to any journalist.

He said he always welcomed constructive criticism. “I believe journalists report independently,” said Sharif.

He further said that they had to take tough decisions and actions because there was nothing they could do. “No prime minister has ever said goodbye like I’m leaving after meeting all,” said the outgoing prime minister.
