ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani court in the country’s federal capital convicted a woman and sentenced her to death for allegedly blasphemous post online.

A report of Aaj News said Judge Afzal Majoka of Islamabad Special Court announced the verdict on Thursday in the case lodged under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) – the law aimed to tackle cybercrimes and electronic crimes.

During the proceedings, the woman was found guilty under Section 295-C of PPC a law that mandates the death penalty for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Special Court also imposed a fine of Rs0.3 million, and announced a separate sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a one thousand fine under Section 11 of the Electronic Crimes ActAct.

After the verdict, the convicted woman got right to appeal. The special courts under PECA were established in July this year, following consultations with Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, to specifically handle cases related to electronic crimes.

Let it be known that Blasphemy incidents in Pakistan are deeply contentious, largely stemming from the country’s stringent legislation. These laws prescribe severe penalties, including the death penalty, for acts deemed as insulting Islam or its figures.

Top cases of blasphemy like those of Asia Bibi, and Mishal Khan were condemned by world. Experts said misuse of these laws is common, and it can lead to mob violence.
