Ghulam Nabi Memon, the Inspector General of Police Sindh, on Monday chaired the first high-level meeting/video conference at the Central Police Office Karachi, assuming his charge. The meeting was attended by all Additional IGs, DIGs, SSPs, and other senior officers serving in various capacities across the province. The session deliberated on the current law and order situation in Sindh, including police security plans against crime prevention, organized crime, and other serious offenses.
Measures to strengthen police intelligence and enforcement, as well as directives for further action, were discussed, with additional essential instructions provided. I.G. Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, issued instructions to reinstate the Task Force against gambling, narcotics, and drugs with immediate effect.
He stated that if an Intelligence report from the Special Branch is proven inaccurate, the responsible officer will be immediately dismissed from service. Moreover, in areas where gambling, narcotics, organized crime, and drug dens are active, strict punitive actions will be taken against SSPs and SHOs who fail to report such activities promptly to the concerned SSP and AIG, as there is no room for leniency within the police department.
He emphasized that all SSPs ensure their presence in their respective offices from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, during which they will not only schedule meetings with the public but also ensure the timely resolution of their complaints and issues. He stressed that the process of free FIR registration should be made genuinely accessible and user-friendly, and strict disciplinary action will be taken against SHOs and SHOs for malpractices. I.G. Sindh instructed SSPs that minor crimes should not be rewarded with promotions, and notifications/orders for the appointments of additional SHOs should also be issued, aiming to fill the vacuum in supervisory responsibilities in the concerned areas. He expressed his preferences for the welfare of police and their families, and plans for the early implementation of health cards were discussed.
Regarding the Inspection Department, he mentioned that promotions to field officers in the Inspection Department would be given as a one-step promotion without seniority, and every investigator’s progress would be evaluated based on their qualifications and performance. Out of 171 traffic signals in the city, only 54 are reported to be functioning correctly.
I.G. Sindh instructed those comprehensive proposals be sent to the Sindh government for the maintenance and improvement of traffic lights, empowering the Traffic Engineering Bureau of the Traffic Police Department with regular duties. He emphasized that the installation of cameras and the appointment of armed police personnel on traffic signals should be expedited to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and enforce traffic laws effectively. He warned the traffic police that the presence of tolls and checkpoints on roads, highways, and other places should be immediately eliminated. Otherwise, strict disciplinary action will be ensured.
