LAHORE – Citizens of Punjab will now have to meet another requirement to get M-Tag, which is necessary to use motorways, as the provincial government is taking measures to combat air pollution.
The decision comes after various cities of Punjab, particularly Lahore, witnessed record increase in smog with Air Quality Index reaching hazardous level.
As of today, the air quality in Lahore is very unhealthy with AQI standing at 190. PM2.5 concentration in Lahore is currently 22.2 times the WHO annual air quality guideline value.
New Requirement for M-Tag Issuance
Reports said the Punjab government has decided that M-Tag will not be issued to the vehicles that lacked fitness certificate.
All owners of vehicles will require to obtain the fitness certificate as they would need to submit it along with copies of registration book and license while applying for an M-Tag.
Furthermore, over 30-year-old vehicles will not be allowed to use motorways from October to January every year to tackle smog.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the measure have been taken to control smog in the region, adding that the new rules will initially apply to government vehicles.
