Mobile phone services suspended in Karachi, other Sindh cities amid Chehlum processions

KARACHI – Authorities have suspended cellular services in major cities of Sindh, including Karachi, as part of security measures on account of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala.

A day earlier, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar said that mobile phone services will be suspended in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur and Khairpur in order to maintain law and order amid procession of Chehlum.

Saying string security measures have been taken for the procession, he said these will also been aerially monitored.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also issued a statement in this regard. It said voice and mobile data service will remain suspended in the cities of Sindh.

A ban on pillion riding has also been imposed across the province, including Karachi, to avoid any untoward incident.

The government of Sindh announced holiday for all public and private schools on August 26 to mark the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain R.A.

As per the announcement, all public and private schools will remain closed in Karachi and Sindh on Monday, August 26, in observance of the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (R.A).

The decision was made by the steering committee of the provincial education department, according to the official notification.

The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) will be observed with religious devotion and under tight security measures across the province.

This day marks the conclusion of a 40-day period of mourning following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala, which took place on the 10th of Muharram in 680 AD.

Various cities across the province will witness mourning processions that include Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah.
