In a heartbreaking incident, a five-year-old child lost their life, and 15 others have fallen victim to a measles outbreak in the village of Saleh Muhammad Burfat, near Jgungshahi town in district Thatta. The outbreak has not spared remote areas of both district Thatta and Sujawal, affecting numerous children.

District Health Department officials have swiftly responded to the crisis, dispatching teams to the affected villages to assess the true extent of the outbreak. Coastal areas of Sujawal district are also grappling with a surge in measles cases.

Dr. Hanif Memon, the District Health Officer of Sujawal, acknowledged the severity of the situation and outlined the measures being taken to contain the spread of measles. “We have formed survey and vaccination teams dedicated to regularly visiting the affected areas,” he stated. Additionally, a delegation from the World Health Organization has visited the villages reporting measles cases, conducting awareness sessions to educate the community.

Dr. Memon emphasized the role of lack of awareness, unhygienic conditions, and poor nutrition in the rapid spread of measles. He called upon civil society to collaborate with the health department in preventing further outbreaks.
