Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has highlighted the issue of exorbitant electricity bills, stating that many citizens receive bills equivalent to their monthly incomes.
During the inauguration of the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry Project, Nawaz stressed the importance of accurate data for future planning.
“Accurate data is essential for delivering relief to those in need,” she said. She emphasised the need for a social registry to categorise the deserving population and ensure the rightful individuals receive assistance.
“Every district is compiling verified data, including information about disabled individuals. We aim to have authentic data so that the deserving get their due rights,” she added. The project includes over 5,000 registration centres, allowing citizens to register online from home or via the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry helpline at 080002345.
She pointed out that a large portion of Punjab’s 130 million population struggles to pay their electricity bills.
“Many people’s electricity bills are equal to their monthly salaries or consume a significant portion of their income, making it difficult to manage household expenses,” she said.
