KOHAT – A major progress has been reported from the grand jirga held in Kohat to peacefully resolve the dispute between two tribes in Kurram.
An agreement between the parties was nearly finalized during the grand peace jirga held at Kohat Fort.
Under the proposed agreement, both sides agreed to surrender heavy weapons to the government.
Sources now claimed that the tribal elders signed the agreement during the jirga in Kohat while some members of one party are expected to sign today.
The final decision would be announced today at the Kohat Commissioner’s Office.
For the past two and a half months, the Parachinar-Peshawar main road and routes to Upper Kurram have remained closed, with all supplies to Upper Kurram suspended.
Tehsil Chairman Agha Muzamil has expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis, stating that 123 children have died due to a lack of medicines and access to medical treatment, which should be a wake-up call for the government.
Agha Muzamil also highlighted severe shortages of essential items in Kurram, where hotels, public transport and businesses have been shut for three weeks.
A sit-in protest at the Kurram Press Club entered its ninth day amid demonstrations being held at five other locations in Parachinar.
The protests also erupted in Karachi over the situation in Parachinar and disrupted the traffic flow in several areas.
The roads blocked due to the protests prompted traffic police to announce alternative routes.
The grand peace jirga in Kohat moved closer to finalize an agreement between the parties, and hoped to restore peace in Kurram District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
