PM Imran attends Beijing Winter Olympics’ colorful opening ceremony

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday attended the magnificent opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.

Several Pakistani officials and ministers, including Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, were present on the occasion.

The Opening Ceremony for the Beijing 2022 was held at the Beijing National Stadium, with 15,000 spectators in presence.

It lasted 100 minutes, ending with fireworks. The ceremony featured an estimated 3,000 performers.

Around 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries and regions are participating in over 100 events.

From Pakistan, only one athlete, Muhammad Karim, is taking part. Three officials are also part of the contigent.

As Pakistan team walked into the arena at the opening ceremony, PM Imran Khas stood up and applauded them.

The Pakistani premier reached China on Thursday on a four-day official visit to attend the opening ceremony of the Winters Olympics in show of solidarity as several western countries have announced diplomatic boycott of the event.

He was received at Beijing Capital International Airport by Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao, Ambassador Wu Jie, and senior officials of the Embassy including Ambassador Moin ul Haque.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yousaf, Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood and Special Assistant on China Pakistan Economic Corridor Khalid Mansoor are part of the delegation led by the premier.

The premier is also scheduled to hold meetings with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other officials.

FM Qureshi in a statement said that several Chinese companies are desirous of making investments in Pakistan.

He said the visit will promote high-level exchanges between Pakistan and China and help further boost their relations.

Finance Minister Tarin said that the prime minister would propose the Chinese leadership to shift their industry in Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones to develop a win-win situation besides extending assistance in agriculture.
