The University of Gujrat (UoG) has implemented a Punjab government decision by making the learning of the Holy Quran translation mandatory for its students at various departments.
It was announced at the varsity’s 17th academic council meeting held here the other day at Hafiz Hayat Campus with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Shabbar Atiq in the chair.
The proceedings began with the council unanimously approving the agenda of its previous meeting.
Later, the members discussed and deliberated on a number of proposals put forward by the chairpersons and HoDs before giving their approval.
The Holy Quran translation course is compulsory. However, non Muslim students can take up a course in ethics instead.
Moreover, the prescribed course material for the subjects like Islamic Studies and Ethics comprehensively deals with each requisite topic.
Therefore, no other subject would implicitly or explicitly refer to any specific religion or a sect in the examination.
The council disclosed that as per directives of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) the UoG plans to set up a centre for psychological and mental rehabilitation of patients recovered from COVID-19.
The meeting was attended online by Punjab government HED representative Usman Ibrahim and external member Umar Javed.
Among others present were Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Faheem Malik, faculty deans Dr Fauzia Maqsood, Dr Muhammad Mushahid, Controller Examinations Dr Danish, Principal NSMC Dr Zafar Iqbal Gill, chairpersons, HoDs, directors of UoG.
