LAHORE — Lahore alleged rape case continues to remain in the news amid protests in Punjab and now a security guard detained in the case has been released on bail.
The security guard was held after a clip circulated online, alleging that a female student was sexually assaulted. However, investigations initiated by the police and subsequently ordered by Maryam Nawaz found no evidence to substantiate the claims.
Several people including lawyers and students were arrested amid the outrage. In a press conference, Maryam Nawaz said individuals pushing propaganda to create unrest would be held accountable, hinting at potential political motivations behind the allegations.
Despite the security guard’s release and the lawyer’s detention, student protests are ongoing. Students are calling for the establishment of anti-harassment committees in educational institutions and demanding justice for victims of assault.
Besides Lahore, students in Rawalpindi, Gujrat and other cities protested against an alleged related assault, vandalising premises and expanding their demonstrations to other areas.
College and university students are accusing the administration of trying to cover up the incident by deleting CCTV footage and suppressing protests.
